Andhra Pradesh continues to witness a surge in coronavirus (Covid-19) positive cases, even as it ramped testing significantly.

According to a government bulletin released on Saturday, 222 new cases have been detected in the last 24 hours. With this, the total number of Covid-19 positive cases in the State has gone up to 5,676 while 82 succumbed to the dreaded virus so far.

Out of the new 222 cases, 186 were locals, 33 from other States and three were foreign returnees. The total number of those who were cured so far is at 3,185, with the discharge of 94 patients since Friday.

The State government also permitted at least four ICMR-approved private laboratories in the State to conduct coronavirus tests. It also fixed ₹2,900 as testing charge per person and ₹2,400 per sample (included pooled) sent by the government.

A record 14,477 samples were tested in the last 24 hours.

The Special Chief Secretary (Health) had directed the District Medical and Health Officers to closely monitor the labs and strictly enforce the prescribed rates.
